US test address format and validation
A US test address normally uses a street line followed by the city, two-letter state code, and numeric ZIP code. Use this structure for QA fixtures and choose a regional generator above when the form needs a generated record.
Field template
[Street number] [Street name]
[City] [State code] [5-digit ZIP code]
United States
Validation checklist
- Keep the city separate from the two-letter state code.
- Use a five-digit ZIP value unless the test explicitly requires ZIP+4.
- Select the country as United States and keep generated contact details fictional.
- Use the regional pages for local coverage notes, area codes, and representative localities.
Official format translated into form fields
USPS Publication 28 separates the delivery address line from the last line containing an approved city name, two-letter state abbreviation, and five-digit ZIP or ZIP+4 value. Exact mailing standardization requires current USPS City State and ZIP+4 matching data. NorthMock applies the field structure for development tests but does not claim postal certification or guaranteed delivery. Review the USPS Publication 28 addressing standards for mailing requirements.
Units and address line 2
For apartment or suite tests, use a recognized designator such as APT, STE, UNIT, or RM. USPS prefers the secondary unit at the end of the delivery address line, or directly above it when the line would be too long.
ZIP and ZIP+4 as strings
Treat ZIP values as strings so leading zeroes are preserved. Test both five-digit ZIP values and optional ZIP+4 values when the application claims to support the extended format.
United States address-form QA matrix
Use these cases to test acceptance, normalization, error messages, exports, and round-trip persistence. They describe field behavior rather than deliverable example addresses.
| Case | Fixture | Expected behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ZIP | City, two-letter state code, and a five-digit ZIP string | Accept without converting the ZIP to a number |
| Leading-zero ZIP | A valid five-digit value beginning with 0 | Preserve all five characters in forms, CSV, and JSON |
| ZIP+4 | Five digits, a hyphen, and four extension digits | Accept only when the product supports the extended field |
| Secondary unit | APT, STE, UNIT, or RM plus a unit value | Retain it in address line 1 or a dedicated line 2 field |
| State mismatch | ZIP prefix outside the selected state allocation | Flag the inconsistency without claiming street-level validation |
| Washington, DC | Washington as city and DC as the region code | Do not substitute Washington state code WA |
